Smokey National Park
Lake Keowee is a 18,500 acre body of water and has 300-miles of shoreline. Constructed by Duke Power Company to generate hydroelectric power, it borders Jocassee and Hartwell lakes connectiing them into a chain of lakes. Bass fishing is tremendous on this reservoir and with its clear water and mountain views, it makes for a remarkable fishing experience. 1:00 hour travel time from Asheville The Nantahala National Forest consists of 531,286 acres and is managed jointly by the USDA Forest Service and the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission. Together they manage the wildlife population and habitat with help from hunting associations and other government funded organizations. The Nantahala is located to the west of Asheville and is the largest National Forest in NC. The Pisgah National Forest is a 505,226 acre national forest located in the in the southern mountains of North Carolina surrounding Asheville. This area is open to hunting and fishing and is home to trout, turkey, deer, black bear, and grouse. Some of the vegetation consist of red, black, and scarlet oak, fraiser fir, mountain laurel, rhododendron, and red spruce. Hiking is the primary way to get around however some trails are marked for horses. The Smokey national park has 11 million visitors yearly , double that of any other national park. The 814 square mile park is home to over 1,800 black bear and the worlds largest diversity of salamanders. Hiking and camping in this park is a phenomonal experience. All streams in the park hold excellent wild trout populations and many have little if any pressure from other anglers. Accessing by boat to camp on the several lakeside campsites or hiking in gives you the edge of getting where few fly fishermen can.
